Hailed by many as Australia’s greatest living stage actress.  In a career spanning five decades she has acted, directed and produced for all Australian state theatre companies, and in 1991 she was made a Member of the Order of Australia for her contribution to the arts. 

She has directed major productions and successfully run two flagship state theatre companies – the Queensland Theatre Company in the late 1990s and Australia’s pre-eminent company, the Sydney Theatre Company from 1999 to late 2007.

Regularly described in Australia as perhaps the finest actor of his generation.  His break came when he was cast as the lead role in Jewboy, a film that screened at both the Cannes Film and Sundance Film Festivals.

Ewen was cast by Philip Seymour Hoffman in Riflemind, a play by Andrew Upton and in 2009 won a Helpmann Award and a Sydney Theatre Award for his performance as Prince Hal opposite Cate Blanchett in The War of the Roses.

In 2010 he won his second Helpmann Award and a Green Room Award for Richard III at the Melbourne Theatre Company. The following year he played Hamlet in sellout season at the Melbourne Theatre Company.
